Billy Needs You!

Billy and the Great British Nappy Hunt is run on a shoestring by a very small team of enthusiastic nappy retailers and manufacturers.  Our aim is to educate parents as to the benefits of choosing cloth nappies, and to encourage an increased uptake of real nappy users via our twice annual Hunt competitions  – The Great British Nappy Hunt which is held during Real Nappy Week in April, and Cloth Isn’t Scary (it really is very easy to use!) which is run over Halloween.

This is where we need YOU to share your love of cloth nappies, to tell everyone how great they are on containment, how easy they are to use, how soft and fluffy they are (would you wear paper underwear?) etc,  and also to share with everyone and anyone you can think of about Billy & The Great British Nappy Hunt and his mission to cloth nappy every baby.

We’re indebted to our sponsoring nappy retailers, wholesalers and manufacturers for their wonderful array of prizes, we’ll be telling you more about these very soon!WeNeedYou

Billy is on a mission…..

In late January 2013, in that post Boxing Day Sales period when sales traditionally slump before pay day, several of the nappy retailer members of the Federation of Cloth Nappy Retailers were bemoaning the fact that the fun had gone from the Real Nappy Week promotions of years gone by, and the only benefactors were the hard core current cloth nappy users who were expecting a hefty discount to stock up on the supplies for the coming year.

Mountain of stinking bin bags

‘In the olden days’, reminisced Miranda Stamp veteran nappy seller of Twinkle Twinkle (est.1999) ‘Real Nappy Week was all about education and not at all about discounts. Indeed we didn’t manage to offer discounts in our first Real Nappy Week back in 2000 as most of our sales then were from our printed catalogue rather than via our website, so we couldn’t really afford a print run just for the week. Instead we went out and about in the community and held events to show folk just what a modern cloth nappy was like and how much waste it would save.’ ‘One year, it was very hot in April, and I remember our local council organising a photo shoot with several local mums and babies and a carrier bag of colourful washable nappies alongside a HUGE mountain of stinking bin bags of rubbish to represent the comparison in volume between using cloth and using disposables. The smell was awful, but it was worth it we made the front page of all four local papers, and our regular monthly nappy events were mobbed with interested parents keen to reduce waste and save money’.

what a big pile?

(source unknown possibly WRAP or WEN)

Diaper hunt

So in that vein, as we chatted, we decided it would be a good idea to put the education back into the week, and to inform as well as offer incentives and prizes and to simply get more people using cloth nappies. In other countries a cloth diaper hunt had been very successful to educate and encourage uptake of washable nappies, so we decided to run a competition in a similar format. While searching for a logo we came across Billy and quickly he gained personality and a purpose! We drew on the resources of our Team and with the skills of such clever people as Beth Sutherland who is responsible for the fabulous artwork and Steve Kimber of Babybots the resident computer geek, the website and the competition drew shape. We pooled our knowledge for our resources section, bringing together all the relevant information anyone might possible want to know about nappies from how to use, to where to buy into one place as a central resource.

Encourage uptake

Our competitions always seek to educate as well as to encourage uptake, with prizes offered to hosts for nappy events as well as running ‘Cloth Isn’t Scary’ Halloween competition to encourage the unsure to dip a toe in to try reusable nappies. With effective use of social media to promote our competitions and events, we also run regular Cloth Clinics to help anyone with any queries about choosing or using real nappies. In short the Great British Nappy Hunt is not just for Real Nappy Week but a resource for use throughout the year.

Inclusive

Billy’s campaigns have always been inclusive and we welcome WAHMs, sole traders, limited companies etc with an interest in cloth nappies or baby goods in general to be involved in our promotions and competitions. We really want to #sharethelove! We are also proud to be working in partnership with Go Real, a CIC who promote cloth nappies:

“Since 1996 Go Real and their predecessors have been working hard to bring Real Nappies into the public eye using the platform of Real Nappy Week. This year is no different. It’s time to change the world and we’re doing it, one nappy at a time!”
